Hello everyone, I am new to the forum and was referred here by a friend. My brother -in-law has a car that he just ended up with in his divorce settlement. Long story! It is a 1939 Packard 4 door sedan. I believe it was the low end 100? The cool thing is this car was last driven and plated in 1963. It has 58K miles and is unrestored with a repaint back in the early 60's. We are going to sell the car but I need help putting a value on it. The car does run but brake pedal goes to the floor. I am sure it needs all the rubber in the hyd. system. The body is very solid, interior appears original, and very complete overall. If anyone could possibly give me a realistic value of this car in it's current condition, I would greatly appreciate it.

Sold! I'll give you $1500 for it ;)

I'm not too up on the values of Packards before my era (1950) but I DO know they're hard to nail a fair price down on because there aren't a ton to compare to where you can find 5 or so in the same condition (unlike Chevy's, Fords, etc). And supply and demand are both just low.

Does the motor roll over? What's it look like under the hood? Body tag and serial numbers? More interior shots? What's the undercarriage look like? That's what buyers want to know.

Depending on which model it is, NADA is saying 9,000 - 30,000 for even the low end sedan. Problem is, most Packard fans already have one, not near as in demand as tri-5 Chevys etc. So even if you have a $250,000 car, if no one wants it, it's not worth $1,000. I hope someone that knows these better will chime in, looks like a nice original example and hope it finds a great home and you get a fair price for it.

I'm no expert on appraising Packards, but I did a quick review of recent Craigslist ads and came up with a few six cylinder cars that may help in determining your vehicle's potential market value. Of course, as has been said many times before, the car's only worth what the buyer is willing to pay.

Obviously, I am no relation to any of these sellers and can't vouch for the accuracy of their descriptions.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I've talked to several people since this post and sure have learned alot this week. Value seems to be all over the place on these cars. I welcome everyone's opinion. We'll have the title next week and need to make some decisions. Don

Realistically, with an older restoration, and in need of new paint, I would be surprised if it could sell for more than $15,000. That would be assuming that it ran well.

I agree with West and am adding my support as such because if you really want to sell it, be realistic, especially as the car has not been maintained in 40 years, meaning expensive overhauls of brake, cooling, fuel, electrical systems. One important accessory that will impact the marketability of the car is the overdrive. 15K is top end, serviced, in the right market. 8-10K as is.

I agree with the 8-10K figure. I just don't think were in the "right Market" now. Once the title is released later this week we might try e-bay and see what kind of response we get. Thanks for the input.

My advice is to get the car operational. It will only help you to get it sold.

The car is probably in the $20 - $30k range as a running (and stopping!) car.

I would list it for sale on Ebay. Take a lot of good quality pictures in a nice setting... a park or some place similar.
