Pitman Arm repairs

Hello all, the ball on the pitman arm of my 1946 Clipper is toast. Is it preferable to replace the entire pitman or is a new ball available to replace the worn item? The item does not come up on Kanters or Egge. I shall check out Max M but just checking what the font of knowledge at info.com thinks? Thanks.. Peter Toet

As I've said many times and as common sense should tell you, don't rely on the suppliers' Website as they are typically not updated once created which was done years ago in most cases. Contact them directly for whatever you need.

That said, it appears that the same Pitman arm was used on various models through the 23rd series so if yours coincides, it opens up the possibilities of finding one! Unfortunately the closest I have, which isn't close at all, is an NOS idler arm which I believe fits only certain prewar cars but I am not sure. It has casting number 824040 but I've not been able to cross reference it.

You should be able to purchase the spherical ball with an integral shaft from the usual Packard sources. However, I think those still were pressed into the lug in the pitman arm then pressed/rolled to secure them. If so, you’ll need to have a machine shop carefully grind/mill off the old swage and press the old one out, then press the new one in and swage the shaft over the lug to secure it. Some people have tack welded them in but it is preferable to press-swage the end…think of the end as a giant solid rivet.

The ball was not considered a service item. I doubt it would be very hard to find a replacement pitman arm if you call and ask.

Peter,

I'm wondering if any pitman arms were in the parts Noel took down to you, back about 2010/2011?

Thanks Mal, I shall check on this as I have about 15 tonnes of Packard crap at the Ranch. I do not recall anything in Club stock or in Noel's stuff, which is additional to the Farm ( Ranch) stuff. I am just so relieved that the malady appears to be in the pitman arm ball and not in the steering box. It definitely needs a new lower seal but appears to be smooth. Peter T

If there is a part that needs to come from the states, Id suggest getting that part to one of the Kiwis that are coming to Hershey, so they can bring it back to New Zealand in their suitcases. The current issues of shipping things to and from the US is causing issues for many shippers.

Hello all, I have chased up a second hand but looks ok RHD Pitman arm but also need to replace the cross shaft seal on my 46 Clipper Eight, The Packard part number is 384727, Group 15.3225 Does anyone have a cross reference CR or other Part number please?. I have a Repco part number of P1314. But it is not recognised by our seal suppliers locally. The seal is different to the 51- 54 seal, Packard part Number 422394 which is CR12334. Thanks. Peter Toet.

What is the internal diameter and outer diameter for where the seal is?

In other words, the shaft diameter and the bore diameter.

I haven't pulled the seal out yet, in case I cannot get another one in a reasonable time. It is a heavy weep rather than a leak. I was hoping that someone had replaced one recently and has a modern part number ( CR or Flaseal etc. ). I have the BSC oil seal catalogue which goes into seal/shaft diameter and seal width etc.
