Someone will come along with the definitive answer, but typically at least thru 1950 the ground cable was attached to one of the generator-to-motor block mounting bolts, those that go thru the swivel bracket.

I believe that was also the case thru 54 but is a bit vague. I think the pict in SM appears to be going under generator to rear bracket mounting bolt but another in a training manual appears to be going nearer water pump toward front of engine--so maybe to front bolt. Think either would be more correct than to motor mount.

When I found my '54 the cable was attached to the front of the water pump as in the picture below, I believe this was the original location. I have since moved it to the where the lower generator bracket attaches to the the engine so it doesn't lay across the alternator. I will let other 51-54 owners chime in as to where theres were located.

Yeppers I believe that's right kev. My 52 has it attached to th water pump through the "unused" hole above the generator slide mount. I don't know if my cable is an early replacement, but its rubberized, and goes over the generator with out touching it....
EDIT: on the back side. Not the pulley side.

From an entirely original 1954 Cavalier, it's a woven strap and connects to the water pump just above where the generator bracket is attached.

For whatever it is worth I have owned 2 Packard Deluxe Clippers with the 327 ci engine, one I bought in 1973 (my first car of any kind) and the one I currently own which I bought in 2008 and both had its ground wire attached to an unused hole on the driver's side in what the parts manual calls the water pump assembly. Part # 5.1900
Ken Edit: They were both 1953 models.

Thanks guys. Since the waterpump is high on my list of repairs to get ready for this spring, the pump and ground strap will get done at the same time...
I also found a picture in the Air Conditioning section of the shop manual that showed the ground strap going to the waterpump!
