Unless I'm mistaken a GM style electronic distributor and the Pertronix set up will not be compatible with your 6V battery and your lights and electric accessories will likely blow if you put a 12V battery in it. If you want to keep things 6V but have a hotter ignition call Joe Hunt magnetos they can custom build one to fit the L8 block for around $800 and it will be completely independent of your battery/ charging system as it generates its own spark.

the pertronix guys make a 6v system thats positive ground too ,Its what goes in every old tractor ,they have a compatable "hot" 6 v coil,
The slow crank got fixed by the larger napa 6v battery that actually puts out enough cch to spin the engine and hot the spark nicley ,But I want to continuue to smooth out and enhance the engine performance ,MORE!
maby if the gm hei distributer you mentioned is just 12 v I could get a rebuilt stock distributer with new bushings/berings and working vacumb advance ,and THEN put in my pertronix unit

That would work better the HEI has an integrated coil and came on later engines late 70s into the 90s its the big rather ugly (in my opinion) one you see in the parts stores and speed parts catalogs but it works well and is very dependable. I didn't know about the 6V Pertronix kit thanks for the tip, does it eliminate the points?

Yes, points eliminated. Mate just installed a Pertronix including coil in his '37 Super 8 Delco-Remy distributor yesterday, see this post.

Just ordered my pertronix for the 6v + gr system ,they have worked wonders in all of my 12 v neg ground projects

,did the timing change much when you installed your unit on the distributer ? they say to run the engine for a while and then reset the timing.the link was great , I noticied theres a shiney black ground line from the case to the plate,is that part of the system?

I think they developed these ,the 6 v units ,before the 12 v systems because they go on everyones tractor ,which are usually 6 v .

for anyone with a 288 or 327 pos ground 8 cyl the part number is 1183p6 and thier "flamethrower" coil is reccomended because of its ohms. the whole shot with kit and coil is about $200
