You may find a close-up shot in the Photo Archives on this website. Look in the 1935, 1936 and 1937 folders.
I believe you were told correctly, and I think that the stripes above and below the vents is correct for 1938-39 as well. Update: My info on the 1938-39 may not be correct.

My 1937 115C Six Convertible Coupe has a dual pen stripe on the top and bottom of the vents on the hood side panels. Maybe the 1936 One-twenties are the same. Photo shows the pen stripes.
