Just located a photo I took at the 1985 PAC National in Providence RI of Macauley's Phantom II, built up from a 1951 club coupe. The car is currently located in NJ in the hands of a well-known collector.

It, like the other Macauley styling exercises, was a platform for evaluating various styling techniques, and probably some just to satisfy his own ego. Thus these cars had a variety of appearances over time - just look at the many incarnations of the original Phantom.

Gusha, BTW I see you haven't take me up on my challenge to you! That was, to find a photo of the hot rivet toss from furnace to riveter at a shipyard or bridge construction. I don't have you stumped, do I?

Kevin, I think to understand the spotlight on the roof, we have to understand Macauley the Younger better. I don't really know if he had any actual credentials to warrant his position of VP or Director of Styling or whatever his title was, but I suspect he got the title more because of his father being President and Chairman of the Board at various times. He did some serious work with styling, though almost in concert with professionals, in the early 30s but I suspect by the postwar period he was pretty much just hanging on, a gadfly doing his own thing and being tolerated. Could be wrong, but that's the impression I get.

Some questions to ponder to get a better feel for his true contribution postwar would be what commercial features or successes did his Phantom I and II lead two? Was he involved at all in the Pan American, Balboa, Caribbean, Monte Carlo, Mayfair, etc.? I have my own opinions but certainly welcome other viewpoints.

The pic that Gerd (Guscha) posted shows the spotlight facing forward. Maybe it had a handle inside so it could be rotated?
