I didn't pick up on that when I saw this photo this morning. I think I was distracted by the gold (paint?), missing parking lights on the fender/wing tops, painted headlight bezels, and the added turn signals.

And no comment related to the yellow rims? Admit your cluelessness by saying:

The Russians invented the wheel.

"I was distracted by the gold (paint?), missing parking lights on the fender/wing tops, painted headlight bezels, and the added turn signals"

Concerning the missing parking lights, the added turn signals and the gold plated(?) bumper centre piece, those are all faithfully reproduced on a Signature Model identified as the Last Empress of China's 1938(!) Packard. I have to admit I have one of these models, but it wasn't until Gerds post that I really looked closely at it, although I did know it was a '41 and not a '38. Well that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Because of the Last Emperor/Empress confusion a google search found this Picasa Album photo as well as a similar Picasa Album photo.

"no comment related to the yellow rims?"

Gerd,
You won't believe it but I did see 'em! So for the reference to the Jim's Packard powered "Indy" car blog, after all, "any publicity is good publicity"!

"Admit your cluelessness by saying: The Russians invented the wheel"

While it almost goes without saying that I may be clueless, but I do know the Russians were master copiers! My prime exhibit being the ZIS 110! On that basis, I believe the Russians copied the wheel rather than invented it!

Mal, I have a model of that Packard too. I just figured it was copied from someone's customization. Well, that turned out to be true, the last Emperor of China. Little did I know until now. Thanks to Gerd too.

Mal (Ozstatman), I know that you Aussies are very well informed when it comes to Soviet cars. To provide a specimen, please find attached an older Christmas edition of The Cairns Post, an Australien Newspaper with 133 years history.

Gerd,

Interesting, but in perusing the complete article I see it originated from Associated Press(A.P.). Accordingly, it looks like this remote far north Aussie newspaper was reliant on news agencies for reportage on momentous events from the outside world back in those days before the Interweb! Either that, or those cunning Russians hobbled the ZIS 110's sent to their Communist Bloc partners. Or, and this is probably more likely, rather than being the master copiers I had previously attributed them to be, they missed one cylinder in the copying process!
