Howard,

It's an Echlin ECH ST53. Bought it thinking it was ignition battery start, when that didn't work, I found it was ground start. Changed the starter button wiring. $13.99 + tax.

My '49 Packard Club Sedan project is finally completed after 6 plus years. It was not a "restoration" but more of a "rebuild". Tried to keep it as original as possible but unless you can find a car like this that has been well cared for over its 70 years it is practically and economically impossible. My car was heading to be stripped and crushed after reality set in for the former owner. I loved the design and couldn't pass up buying it. I was able to do virtually all the work myself which kept the rebuild cost within reason plus I had a lot of time to work on it. My work may upset some purists, but I did the best I could to get this car back on the road for people to enjoy seeing a Packard rather than the numerous everyday Fords and Chevys.

Attached is a link to a Flickr album showing the highlights of the project from start to finish. Click on the link and scroll through the pictures if interested.

Congratulations on a project completed. I only wish I had the perseverance (and talent) to do mine without much outside help and in a relatively short time frame. As to the purists, you are correct that some will have tuned out the project a long time ago. For the rest of us, I doubt any would think anything you did was outrageous -- particularly if it meant the car was destined to have become a new Toyota. You kept it a Packard in all the important respects and is a job well done. You now have a car that is unique, not likely to be confused with anything else, and one to be proud of.

Joe,

My congratulations as well. I've enjoyed following along from afar as you've returned your Packard to "better than new" condition. Well done!
