That always was a good running car. It used a quart of oil every 1,500 miles and was referred to as Old Faithful. Working cylinder oilers probably contributed to its longevity. I have a heated garage and not much use for my modern car, so I mix 15ml per gallon top cylinder oil with the gas because with a heated garage it can sit for long periods. After he got the phaeton, the car saw a lot less use.

What happened to the side mount covers and the stone guard? Those always were on the car and are not easy to acquire.

When I was working in prototype, I found that diesel trucks provide about the same sensations of power only without the gear whine.

Two other notes: When the weather was humid the carburetor would freeze condensation on the intake to solid ice. Also, one reason his cars lasted so long was because he didn't rev those motors. He only used the gears to avoid lugging. Whereas Hirsch's low mileage 745 was already showing age because Billy always wound the gears because the whine made it sound like a fire engine.

We've also always used a bit of Marvel Mystery Oil (top cylinder oil) in our gas, four ounces per 10 gallons, tho' also have a Vaco/Marvel top oiler device feeding directly into the intake manifold under the carb, metered to use a quart of Marvel per 1,100-1,200 miles. A fellow out here we've long known, Jack Hovey, one of the world's premiere rebuilders of Rolls-Royce Merlins, whether built in Britain or Detroit, tosses four ounces per 10 gallons in his shop truck. Our mutual departed friend as a young wrench at the Alameda Naval Air Station during War II said Pan Am's chief of maintenance swore by Marvel Mystery Oil, ordering it by the 55-gallon drum.

Knowing George'll go to an appreciative home'll take some of the sting out of selling. A half century run's not bad.

Bit late to the party, if you could call it that, sorry.

I've now marked "George's" Registry entry as "SOLD".

I get good results in old cars using MMO at 4 oz to 10 gallons. Modern gasoline is "dryer" than what was typically available up to about 1970, besides being adulterated with ethanol.

Gerd,

I know I'm getting old, and consequently not as "sharp" as I used to be, but I can't see the difference between your link and mine. Could you explain or point me in the right directon?

One is to the registry in general; the other is to the specific post. Also, best not to post URLs directly but rather use the little link icon (it looks like a link of chain) to create a link to some words.

Photo taken by me in 1988, during The Packard Club’s National Meet in Birmingham, Alabama. I was driving Jim Kaufmann’s 1941 180 LeBaron limousine, going back to the hotel from the judging site.

There I was, minding my own business at about 50 miles per hour on a two-lane road, with the driver’s window open and my camera sitting on the seat to my right – lens cap off. In the background noise I heard an increasing roar, and saw a blur coming up fast in the rear view mirror. Holding onto the steering wheel with my left hand, I blindly grabbed for the camera with my right hand and swung it in front of me, aimed to the left. As I clicked the shutter, Don roared past doing at least 70 (I never asked him later).

About a week later, after I had received my prints back from Fox Film (remember those days?), I saw that the shot had turned out pretty darn well. (The blur on the right is the edge of the vent window.) I had several copies made from the negative, and sent them to both Don and to Richard Langworth, who would publish my article on the meet in The Packard Cormorant magazine.

Stuart (ECAnthony), great story. Shooting from the hip with one hand on the steering wheel – that only works in a particularly lucky moment.

Mal, this is a classic misunderstanding. I'm talking about the registry. The link there is wrong.
