1942 120 convertible, Carb heat shield and battery cable

I need a little help with a couple of items. As I put my 42' slowly back together, In all the pictures I took when I disassembled it, I can not find pictures that show either of these items

First one is how does the heat shield mount by the carburetor?

Second question is how does the negative battery cable route from the starter to the battery, I have one cable clamp that I tagged but I have no idea where it goes or the route the cable goes.

The heat shield mounts around the fuel pump, not the carburetor. It's mounting should be well illustrated in the service literature but just from memory the upper fastener (right in your photo) goes under the forward manifold stud and nut, the lower one to the rearward pump mounting bolt. IIRC only the senior engine (356) also used a carburetor heat shield.

The battery cable to the starter motor should be the positive cable, not the negative. I can't help with the routing of it but I'm sure someone else will provide that.

That makes sense on the heat shield - I appreciate that.

But I am confused as to the the comment that the positive goes to the starter, I have always run the car with the positive grounded to the chassis and the negative to the starter. I didn't think that was changed till the 50's when 12 volt systems were introduced.

Yes, the cable to the starter should be the negative, but sadly I don't know how it is routed.

Marked up the photo of your heat shield.

1 2 - Mounts to the first stud, at the front of the engine, bolting the exhaust manifold to the block.

2 1 - Mounts to the rear mounting bolt holding the fuel pump to the block.

There are also a couple of photos in this post of the fuel pump heat shield mounted in my '41 120 Coupe.

EDIT - I too had a "mental lapse", references above corrected!

Profuse apologies, of course the battery is positive ground and the negative cable goes to the starter, a gigantic mental lapse on my part.

Perfect, I held the heat shield above the fuel pump and the bolt holes line up perfectly!

On my 42 the positive post sits close to and connects with a woven cable to the "X" member with a bolt. The negative runs along the frame, will have to look to make sure. I see that you have the frame and transmission connected which is a good idea. Dell

Looks beautiful! I'm sure you're very happy to see if coming back together although I'm not sure that the intake manifold would have been painted green originally as it was put on after the engine was painted. Since everything else - every other detail - looks so perfect, I thought I would mention it. Maybe I'm wrong, though.
