Mal, commonly called a scatter shield to contain exploding flywheels and clutches. Especially useful in the slingshot style dragsters where the driver's feet were in close proximity. I wonder what this 5-26 turns in the quarter?

Yes, "scattershield" and called that for good reason, but with time passing and the grey cell count declining it didn't come to me when I penned my post.

It was hard to put my finger on it, but I think the identify why that motor is not running.

yeah i have a complete 526 engine for that car

I traded my neighbour out of a 1926 packard sedan, I am in the procs of restoring it. the nos are 283-2650; vech#102221; motor# 102052. should I chrome instead of silver plating???? I want to chrome the bumpers, and put on white walls. any opinoins about this???

And a request could you please include your '26 Packard in the Packard Owner's Registry here, together with a pic, any known history and how you acquired it?

The early Packards are not my area of expertise but have you looked through the photos of '26 models on this website? I think you'll find that not one of the factory photos of the period show a '26 with whitewalls. And yet, over half of the restored Packards shown do have whitewalls. I like whitewalls myself on most late forties and definitely early fifties but I think your car was probably delivered with blackwalls. Your call.

You inquired about the plating, asking if you should do chrome instead of silver. The choice would be between chrome and nickel (not silver), with nickel being the correct choice if you want to remain authentic. Nickel has quite a different lustre than chrome and at least in my opinion these earlier cars look far better with nickel trim than with chrome. Cost is about the same to have it redone as nickel is the layer that underlays chromium in bright chrome plating.

I am sure it came with silver plating, but you are right nickel will be better. Do you know what model it is? I think it is a 426, but then I dont know. what about the bumbers???thanks

How about the numbers off the patent plate on the cowl, the motor number, and the wheelbase? They should clinch the identification.
