Is there a fuel pump heat shield on a 23rd series Packard 288 engine? If so, does anyone have a photo? My car does not have one, but it does have vapor lock on a 100 degree day.

yes, they all had heat shields, will look for good picture.

here's one for sale on Ebay that is similar but not identical to what yours should be.

These help, but also make sure that your carb has the phenolic spacers between it and the manifold. I also installed a longer fuel line so that I could route the fuel line toward the passenger fender, then back, in order to get it away from the heat of the exhaust manifold. Also use non ethanol gas if you can, or add a little bit of diesel to each tank of gas. And there is always the ever popular wooden pins on the fuel line....

Vertical bracket bolts to front manifold stud and I believe the horizontal bracket goes under the rear fuel pump bolt but I'm not positive about that one.

Yes, one manifold bolt, and the one pump bolt secure it.

Thanks for confirming Kev, I believe the heat shield is one part that's missing on a lot of our vehicles including mine because over the years they were left off after repairs were made and were viewed upon as "uneccesary" for the car to run correctly...so the ones that threw them in the corner thought. To my knowledge new shields can't be purchased and if a used original is found, chances are it's beat up, badly rusted or one of the mounting brackets is missing. It doesn't appear that it would be a difficult item to reproduce though if someone with access to an original and willing to do it could draw up and post a pattern with dimensions.

They may have the blueprint for you, buy a print and help out the proving grounds.

David, interesting about adding a little diesel to the gas mix. Do you have a measurement ratio for that? I have not heard of using the wooden pins? Would you put some in the tank? If I remember right Max Merritt sells heat shields for the fuel pumps.

The use of clothes pins is a strange approach to the problem. But.......it may work, who knows?
