I'm a New Zealand owner and new to Packard ownership.
The exhaust manifold on my '36 120b is cracked; can it be welded?
Is a workshop manual available on-line to show how to remove it.

Most of the Service Manuals are here in the Literature archive. 1935 and up 120s and 1938 Eights would all be the same procedure. I'd ping Flackmaster in regards to a replacement manifold. I hear a rumor he will be in NZ in Feb for Art Decofest, and it's possible there could be space in his suitcase.

Have you contacted Packards of South Pacifc (New Zealand)? ID reach out to Leyton Chan (Club Chairman) as it's possible he may know someone in country that has a spare manifold, or recommendations on trying to have it welded.

If you don't have any luck with The Flackmaster or another source, I hate to dob in a bloke, but Pepe, if he reads this may be able to satisfy your requirement. Pepe is in Victoria, Australia. I remember him sayng a few years back that when he moved he found he had 6(six) Packard 6 cylnder motors he didn't know he had. If you're lucky he might still have some parts in the stash.

Or, if all else fails, the major Packard Parts suppliers, Max Merritt or Kanter may be an option, As well as Tucson Packard, South West Packards and others. Most are in the Directory here on PackardInfo. Look in the Main Menu on the left of this page to find the Directory.

Lastly, I invite you to include your '36 120b in PackardInfo's Packard Vehicle Registry.

Chris - Saying it can be welded is only a written answer. The real answer can only be provided by the person welding. Repairing cast iron is not simple, both in method and skill to have a satisfactory result - depending on the crack, locaction, etc.

Are you the fellow Leyton was asking about a carburetor for?

Yes, I will be coming in February for Deco....but surely you want a manifold sooner. I can supply a manifold, uncracked, and unrepaired. Shipping to NZ is rather expensive, but you know that. Can I check it in my luggage...maybe - already have several other things with transport requests...but maybe.

I brought back a 1940 110 steering column with gearbox in my checked baggage and a manifold is much smaller!

I'm not the guy asking about the carb, just the exhaust manifold.
Mine has failed on both sides of the large hole in the centre, which I am advised by another Vintage Car Club member is where a carb heater unit is fitted to Canadian cars?
I'm advised that I would be better off obtaining a good sound replacement, rather than trying to find a welder experienced with cast iron, so if you are willing to help me out, I'd be most appreciative. Do you have a price in mind? I've also asked on the Packard South Pacific Forum if any are available here.
Meanwhile, I'll get the parts stripped off and try to obtain gaskets for the re-fit. Have you any advice on sources for these?

1. yes, happy to help, I will photo a manifold and consider ransom in the next day or two. Cracks in the central area..common.
2. Canadian Choke??? Ummm....no idea where that rumor originated.?? that depressed area is where the choke spring/mechanism is located. what carb are you running (EE-14?)
3. Check with Brian Taylor for a manifold, and a matching proper headlight glass.
4. Personal request....pinstripe the wheels and possibly add a set of beauty rings, not expensive...
5. Definitely join SPP, great people/network.

Just photographed the rusted out area of the manifold. It looks like the insert has just rusted thin and the exhaust has blown a hole in it; this definitely fits with the Canadian carb heater link theory?
Can anyone in the icy regions of North America confirm this?

Yep, that’s just the insert where the choke coil would go. If that is the only issue, you can just replace that insert.

Here is a picture of mine (1937 120) with everything working. I currently do not have the choke coil installed.
