1939 Super 8

I have a 1939 Super 8 that came in a basket. I am piecing it all back together but have a question about the camshaft. I am assuming it receives lube from the rear via the rear main bearing and it travels through the centre of the cam to each bearing but should there not be a plug in the front of the cam by the timing gear?

but should there not be a plug in the front of the cam by the timing gear?

I really should remember this, I've had enough of those engines apart, but I don't recall. But most engines use oil passing by the front cam bearing to lubricate the timing chain and gears and I suspect yours is the same.

Yes the timing gear is lubricated the same manner as the bearings but the cam is open at front and rear. My thoughts are it should be plugged at the front by the cam retaining nut otherwise there would nut be any pressure inside the cam. Is there anyone I can contact?

G'day nahteekaj,

No need for a PM, here's a pic of Wade disassembling his '37 Super 8 engine. Looks like there's a retainer at the front of the cam. When I'm back in the workshop next week I'll ask Wade about it as he's the real hands on guy there.

Thanks for the pic. I could use a close up right at the end where the cam gear retaining nut goes on. That is where my question is if it is open at that end of the cam the same as the back which would make the cam centre open all the way through like this one or is there a plug there.
