I believe that a casting number, not the engine number. I believe the engine number should be in a XXXX-XXXX format. See the engine serial number guide in FAQ for more info and location as V8's are not by strong suit.

440275-A should be the casting for the 352 block. 440971 would be the 374 casting. The casting date would indicate a 56 block but not sure if the A denotes 56 or some changes in the block from the 55s.

As Kev said, the first four numbers stamped on the flat surface just in front of the valley cover between the oil fill tube and left head will tell you what car it came from

If you mean where it is installed, it goes in a threaded port on the drivers side of the head very near the back of engine. It is about 6" or so directly above the starter. If the wiring is stock, there should be a dark green wire connected between the sender and the gauge.

440275-A casting number and 4-18-56 date would make it a very late '56 352" block.

As mentioned, the S/N will indicate whether it was installed in a Clipper, Packard, Studebaker, Nash or Hudson.
