My 1934 limousine has a very noisy rear axle. I understand it needs a new crown wheel and pinion. I could get them made here in the UK but wondered if they are available in the US? Also I’ve read somewhere it may be a good time to alter the drive ratio so the engine revs less. The engine would certainly take it as it will accelerate from walking speed up a hill in top gear. I think it would benefit as travelling over 50 mph sounds let’s say exciting!

When you say it needs to be replaced, I assume then it has been removed for inspection. If the backlash is wrong that will make noise as will incorrect pinion depth. A qualified person will do a contact pattern test as well.

If the new parts are not installed correctly, you will still get lots of noise.

What Model we looking at?

Modern high speed ring and pinion sets available from Old Retired Fart Manufacturing, 1135 Badder Drive, Troy MI 48083. I believe this is a sort of continuation of the old Phil Bray enterprise.

Thanks for all your help and sorry for not replying sooner. I registered the car on the vehicle registry. It’s an eight. I had someone more knowledgeable than I look at the axle and he was sure that the worn gears are causing the noise. When I got the car it soon became apparent there was no oil in the axle. I didn’t drive it far without oil but maybe the previous owner did. I’ll try contacting the suggested engineers tomorrow.

Thanks for all your help. I've been in touch with EDL Services who have been very helpful. They now just need to know if the car engine is either super 8, 384ci or standard 8, 320ci. Engine serial number is 378118. Would this be standard 8?
I can't wait to get this sorted: Days are getting longer now and spring is on the way!
