The "-5-" means it is a 1949 23rd series that has been renumbered to be a 1950 23rd series. The 23rd series spanned the 1949 and 1950 model years. Similarly, the 22nd series spanned the 1948 and 1949 model years. A "-9-" indicated a 1948 22nd series renumbered to be a 1949 22nd series model. Confused? Others will be along shortly go give you more information.

I thought all the 23rd series sold in 1950 had the -5- regardless if they were renumbered 1949's, or actually produced in 1950. Same with the 22nd series -9-.

BigKev is correct. The 2362 means it's a 23rd series Deluxe Eight Touring Sedan. The -5- means it's a 1950 23rd series. A 2362 without the -5- would be a 1949 23rd series. The re-numbering is a separate issue.

Kev, correct (as usual). Were not left over '49 23rd series cars assigned a new -5- number so they could be called '50s, and same for left over '48 22nd series cars getting a -9- number so they could be called '49s? This is my understanding. (o{I}o)

Yes that is true. But not all "-5-"s and "-9-"s were rebadged cars, that was the point I was trying to make. For example a "-5-" car could have either been a regular production 1950 car or a rebadged 1949 car. Same goes for the "-9-"s

Generally--but not always--the differences between a "standard" and "deluxe" anything Packard offered was mostly extra chrome, fancier interiors and sometimes more options or accessories included on the deluxe car from the factory. There might also be the availability to get a more powerful engine or other item as a paid option which would not necessarily be the case on the lower end car. The name deluxe was kind of used inconsistently. In your year it was a fancier model. In 55-6 it was the low end offering.
In the 23rd series model pagespackardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/model ... php?mode=year&id=1950&ButtonYear=Go you can check the various models and get an idea of differences from yours either from the pictures or literature -- mostly from the sales brochures and specifications -- mentioned and linked in the various model pages.

The Deluxe Eight has pleated and buttoned upholstery, usually houndstooth. a robe cord on the back of the front seat, and fancier trim on the interior door panels. I believe it will have three metal trim strips as opposed to the one on my 'standard" eight Regards John Harley
