I am looking for a diagram that shows how the vac. advance connects to the dist. The diagram I keep finding shows a flat metal ear and one hole in each of the flat plate and vac. adv. The one I have has a horseshoe shaped metal piece fastened to the dist. that has a slot in it. The vac. adv. has two holes in it and a third one close to the vac. adv. body with a smaller screw in it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

If you have the same distributor as i do for my 53 327 (the kind where the whole distributor moves when the vacuum advance is working) then below are pictures of the 3 major pieces and how they fit together. The screw and pointer on the distributor base would go through the hole at the end of the vacuum advance arm and you would loosen it and turn the distributor to adjust timing.

These pics are the same as I've found elsewhere. My dist. has a piece with two screws that holds it to the dist. This piece has a slot about 1 1/2 in long by 1/16th inch wide. There are two pieces that I think should be sandwiched together with the screw and the vac adv. shaft. The dist. is mounted in place and the only way to see this is from the under side. Maybe it's not original.

Can you post a picture or two?

Can you advise which engine or the Packard model you have? The distributor ID number would be helpful, i.e. IGP-4502B, IGT-4203. If it's an IGT-4203 I probably can get some photos.

Edit: If it isn't one of the above Auto-lite distributors, then it isn't listed in Chilton's as being one that was used on the 22nd/23rd series.

Edit 2: OK, so you have a '49 22nd series Super 8 Victoria Convertible. If it has an Auto-lite, it should have an IGP-4502B. Unfortunately I don't have one of those to dis-assemble for you.

Although you are a loooong time PackardInfo member see these are you first posts so . And for having included your '49 Super Eight Victoria Convertible Coupe in the Packard Owners Registry.

I went though all this confusion on my 23rd series 288 distributor. Both Autolite and Delco distributors were used on these Packards. They are not the same and the vacuum advance is a totally different design. It turned out that my distributor had some wrong parts on it. Get the right parts for whatever distributor you have. All this got sorted out by Sandy Chirco at Tucson Packard. he rebuilt my distributor too.
