it proved helpful, i think the rear j brackets have collapsed and lost their strength, i ofund a measurement from frame centerline to center fo bolt hole and will measure to doublecheck my theory

If the actual curved shackle brackets collapsed, I can't even begin to think of what massive forces must have been responsible. Just beyond understanding at this point. If so, damage elswhere can be anticipated.

that is the only thing i can think of as the distance from the j-bracket bolt to the top of the spring is fixed by the shackles and the top fo the spring is rubbing on the frame in between the rivets holding the bracket to frame, any other ideas would be greatly appreciated

Could you post a pic or pic's of this? It might help to identify the problem.

Interesting. Are you sure those the original factory shackles? They don't look anything like the ones shown in training manual, appearing longer and with squared ends. There is only one part # listed for 51-4 so would be interested if any one else has this type.

What would be the center to center bolt spacing on the original shackles?

Here's my two cents worth. Judging by the picture you posted it seems obvious that the shackles on your car are wrong. Should not be much trouble to locate the correct ones. When you have it apart to change the shackles I would replace the rubber bushings as well.

with Bob. Below is a pic of a shackle in my '41 120 Coupe. While obviously not the same as yours, they are approximately in the middle of the J bracket while yours are much much higher.
