So maybe I could cap off the oil pressure line to the oil filter temporally to see if the oil pressure comes up? This oil filter is of the bypass design where it only filters some of the oil since it drains back to the oil pan? I wont do this until I here back on this idea?

I don't see any harm at all in doing this but I wouldn't leave it as a permanent condition as hydraulic lifters require a relatively clean oil supply.

I think we'd all be interested in what the results are.

Careful, because I thought in 1940, they didn't do the Bypass configuration yet. So if you cap off the filter, you will starve the lifters if it is not plumbed for bypass.

I know there were several STB on this, and later they went to the Bypass configuration.

Yes, important point and thanks for bringing that up, Kev. There were over the years a couple of different oil filter routings and always the possibilities of further changes in the ensuing years. If your filter return just drops by gravity to the crankcase, no problem blocking it off. If it's in the circuit that feeds the galley to the lifters, don't do it.

When low oil pressure is the issue, we all hope it's one of those simple things to fix, the oil pressure bypass spring, the filter, the oil vicosity being used, or the pump itself. And all of those should be evaluated; yet the huge majority of times it's the thing we fear the most - excessive bearing clearances. If the crankshaft itself hasn't yet been worn out of specification, replacing main and rod bearing half-shells isn't that much of a job and if the wear if uniform but small, even 0.001 or 0.002 oversized bearing shells are a possibility - that's why they were in the parts book. But if the crankshaft shows wear, it' time to consider the overall condition of the motor before deciding which way to go.

To me that routing sounds as if there is a pigtail and one of the later filter plumbing corrections.

One more thing to check on the 160 is the pil pick up. It is pot metal and can warp where it is bolted to the block. Make sure that it is flat and has a gasket there.
