Very simple car to work on, most mechanics can do it. Take it to a good mechanic, explain it has been sitting and they will do the right things to get it going. MOst notably the engine should not be tried ot be started before some lubrication is put into the cylinders and allowed to sit for a day, then turn it over by hand first.

Also the fuel tank may have lots of crud in it as amy the fule pump and carb. Have it checked for that.

Is it an automatic or manual? I'd want to change the ultramatic fluid if it's an auto if it were me, and check for debris, etc. You never know what's happened to a car or how it was driven before you got it. Lots of cars parked for that long because no one wanted to fix a tough issue like a burnt out tranny.

Or to fix the muffler

If you're going to get it going yourself, do some searches. You'll find good advice like dropping the pan and cleaning the pickup screen, fresh lube, etc. You'll want to be checking axle fluid and brakes etc before test driving. You may find that some ignition tune up and a new battery are needed before it will run smooth enough to drive.

G'day Roy,
to PackardInfo. Plenty of good advice there, and if you have specific questions please come back and ask them. On another note, I invite you to include your '50 Packard in the Packard Owners Registry.

Too many 50 packards showing up around here, starting to get crowded When you get a chance, throw some pics up and describe the car. We're always happy to see another one saved.

Dave, the "Reviving a Car from Long Hibernation" article would be a great addition to the FAQ section.

Roy,
for including your '50 Eight Touring Sedan to the Registry. Good looking car and owner together with an interesting background!

There were actually two Registry entries, including one without a picture. I've deleted that entry.

In addition to everything engine related, I'd strongly recommend checking over the brakes- & replacing all hydraulic parts. If by some miracle the master & wheel cylinders survived, I wouldn't bet my life that they would continue to work when really needed.
