1928 526 Running Board Mat Replacement

I am replacing the running board mat on my 526 sedan. I have found the top material from Restoration Supply but am looking for the material under the mat. From the attached photo it looks like a burlap material. Does anybody have a source for this original material or is there a more modern material that will work better?

Any experience/help will be appreciated.

Rob

Once upon a time that was part of the "battleship linoleum"--not a separate item.

Yup, the burlap (sometimes canvas) was part of the linoleum product but from a couple of histories of linoleum that I've just read, a variety of different fillers were used but no mention of asbestos.

Small dust like particles of asbestos is what one should be concerned about. If you decide to remove the material yourself,I would recommend that you keep everything moist so that dust is not present. Bagging it all up and disposing in the trash all bagged up should be acceptable. Inhaling fine asbestos dust is the health concern.

There were a few fragments of linoleum remaining on the floorboards of my 126, it was dark grey.

Based on the photo above mine was black. However, this is a 1928, 526 sedan. I have seen photos from a couple of other 526's and they seemed plain black like mine. No ribbing of any type.

I have photos of an essentially original 236 Sport (phaeton) taken at the Traverse City Packard national meet and I believe the running boards are in the photo, I'll check tomorrow when I can get back to my PC.

Also, there is another essentially original 236 Sport located just a few miles away, if the photos of the first aren't conclusive I'll call the owner of the second. Give me a day or two.

Some pictures, taken 2008, of an unrestored '24 Sport Tourer. Don't know if these will help.
